Adventist Health Portland’s skilled surgical teams have earned recognition for their outstanding quality outcomes. Our operating rooms are equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical technology, designed with high-level patient care and safety in mind.

Our evidence-based approaches, including robotic and other minimally invasive options when appropriate, offer outstanding outcomes for our patients.

Our surgical specialties

When surgery is needed, you can trust the expertise of our board-certified surgeons. In addition to general surgery, our team offers a number of subspecialties.

Bariatric (weight-loss)

Many people find it impossible to get to a healthy weight through diet and exercise alone. For those with a high body mass index (typically 100 or more pounds overweight), weight-loss surgery adds appetite reduction to their tools so they can finally lose weight and keep it off.

Breast

Accurate diagnosis of breast disease often requires a biopsy during which our breast surgeon, Dr. Frances Ting, takes a small sample of tissue for testing. Dr. Ting’s special training, combined with her compassionate approach, brings patients the information they need to plan their next steps with their health care team. Dr. Ting also performs breast cancer surgeries like lumpectomy, mastectomy and nipple-sparing mastectomy.

Colorectal

Colorectal procedures and surgery can help treat a wide range of issues in the colon, rectum and anus. These include hemorrhoids, cancer, diverticulitis and more. Our surgeons partner you’re your gastroenterologist or primary care provider to craft a personalized treatment plan for your unique situation and goals. When possible, our surgeons use less invasive options like laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery to reduce recovery time, pain and risk of infection.

Hepatobiliary

Diseases of the liver, bile ducts, pancreas or gallbladder may require medication, management and/or treatment, including surgery. Hepatobiliary specialist and OHSU assistant professor Dr. Patrick Worth has special interests in the treatment and management of pancreatitis as well as cancer of the pancreas, bile ducts and liver. Dr. Worth is certified in robotic surgery and is committed to using the least invasive option appropriate to the patient’s specific needs.

Thoracic

In addition to your heart, your chest cavity houses a number of other vital organs like the lungs and esophagus. While some thoracic conditions can be watched over time or managed with medication or lifestyle changes, sometimes surgery is needed. Whatever your unique situation, we look forward to partnering with you and your other medical providers to get you moving toward your goals for your health and your life.

Vascular

Our vascular surgeons work with patients to improve the health of blood vessels all over the body, except the brain and heart. They treat conditions like aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease and peripheral artery disease.

When possible, we work with you to manage your vascular disease with nonsurgical options like lifestyle changes and medication. More severe conditions may require vascular surgery.

Outpatient vs. inpatient surgery

Home is often the best place to heal. Advanced surgical technology and anesthesia have made it possible for many patients to have surgery and go home the same day. When appropriate, outpatient surgery has proven to reduce stress for the patient, speed the process of healing and reduce costs.

More intensive surgeries may require an overnight (or longer) stay in the hospital. This allows our team to more closely monitor your recovery and ensures immediate attention in case of complications.
