What is the American Cancer Society(ACS)?

Founded in 1913, the ACS is the largest community based voluntary health organization. They’re committed to fighting every cancer in every community. They provide education, screenings and support services for individuals. ACS is also involved in key cancer research and making meaningful breakthroughs in the fight against cancer.

Local programs and resources include things like assistance with transportation to and from treatments, lodging assistance if you have to go out of town for treatments, support groups and local nurse navigators, such as Dee.

Cancer Nurse Navigators

Help refer patients to resources. This includes everything from transportation and wigs to sources of physical and emotional comfort and support. They remove barriers between patients and the things they need.

Relay for Life

Relay for Life started 1985 when a physician in Tacoma, Washington, decided to run around a high school track for 24 hours to raise money for cancer care and services. Since then Relay for Life has grown to more than 6,000 events around the world each year and has raised more than 5 billion dollars to support the American Cancer Society’s local support services and major cancer research.

Relay for Life events take place in more than 30 Portland-area communities. Each event has special activities to honor and celebrate cancer survivors as well as paying tribute to those who have lost their lives to this disease. This is an event that connects you with people in your local community who are deeply passionate about this cause.
